October 9, 2012, Sydney, NS – Cape Breton Explorations Inc. has proposed a $36-million biomass plant in Sydney’s Harbourside Commercial Park.

“There’s no burning,” company president Luciano Lisi told The Chronicle Herald . “With gasefication, you actually use the wood gas that’s generated through very, very controlled and slow pyrolysis.”

The co-generation facility will produce six megawatts of electricity and enough fuel for 35 commercial trucks or vans.

The main energy source will be forest biomass, although food and agricultural waste, and other feedstock, will also be used.

The project, which is proposed as part of the province’s community feed-in tariff program, still requires Energy Department approval.
