August 5, 2014, Prince Albert, Sask. – A wood-fired biomass power plant in Prince Albert is shutting its doors, citing a lack of quality wood supply.

According to a report from The Canadian Press/CTV Saskatoon, the Paper Excellence facility was using wood waste to create electricity for the provincial power grid. However, the wood being received was of such low quality that it was rendering the fuel useless.

The closure of the facility, which is a subsidiary of Prince Albert Pulp Inc., will result in 40 jobs lost. However, it is hoped that, if the full pulp mill on site is reopened, as hoped, by the end of 2015, the biomass power project could be restarted with the presence of the higher quality fuel source.
