November 15, 2012, Houston, TX — Algae-based biodiesel is being offered at retail pumps for what the companies involved say is the first time in the U.S.

PropelFuels, a retailer, along with biofuel maker Solazyme are testing a month-long pilot project in the San Francisco area of California.

Drivers may buy the biodiesel for the same price as conventional diesel. Cars need no modifications to run the algae-based fuel, the firms said.

PropelFuels will offer the diesel in Redwood City, San Jose, Berkeley and Oakland, California.
