April 8, 2014, Kahului, Ha. – Pacific Biodiesel has
announced that it will be closing its central Maui biodiesel plant after 18
years in production.

According to a report in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the
decision was made by the company in December after being notified that a
significant number of upgrades would have to be made to the facility in order
to meet new county requirements.

The facility was the longest running commercial biodiesel
plant in the United States, starting up production in 1996. The used cooking
oil will now be sent to Pacific Biodiesel’s state-of-the-art facility on Hawaii
Island.
